The Informant! Trailer – Who knew?

theinformantSteven Soderbergh’s newest film, “The Informant!,” is set to release in October, and the first trailer of the movie has finally been released. “The Informant” is based on Kurt Eichenwald’s book of the same name and chronicles Mark Whitacre’s (played by Matt Damon) journey as an agri-business executive turned FBI informant. Whitacre worked for Archer Daniels Midland and exposed the company’s Lysine price-fixing scheme to the FBI but not before helping himself to a handsome sum of ADM’s funds. The movie was filmed on location last spring in Decatur, Springfield, and St. Louis. Being from Illinois and living in very close proximity to St. Louis, I was pumped when film crews began showing up around the area.

The movie has generated quite a buzz in Central and Southern Illinois. How often do you get to see Matt Damon and Steven Soderbergh hanging around the South-Central? Now that the trailer has been released and a release date set (October 9 to be exact), the excitement is only growing. But I have to admit, Soderbergh threw me a curveball with the trailer. Who knew that this movie was going to be a comedy?!

I thought for sure that this had thriller written all over it. But I do like the idea of it being a comedy. It’s sort of a “Burn After Reading” meets “Michael Clayton.” (I think I was 1 of 3 people in the country that actually liked “Burn After Reading.” The other 2 were Joel and Ethan Coen.) There’s not a whole lot of new material you can bring to the spy thriller genre, so it’s great to see Soderbergh taking a chance and trying something new with the spy-spoof element (and thank God it’s not in the spirit of a “Naked Gun” movie). And anyone that knows me knows that I am a HUGE Matt Damon fan. He can do no wrong in my eyes (I try to repress my memories of “Stuck on You”). Honestly, though, I think Damon has some great comedic chops and it’ll be interesting to see how he approaches the role. This one would be easy to take over the top, so I’m hoping that he was able to hold back enough to keep it on the safe side of cheesy, or in this case, corny.

The movie also stars Scott Bakula (of “Quantum Leap” fame), Melanie Lynskey (Rose from “Two and a Half Men”), Joel McHale (“The Soup” guy) and Tom Wilson (“Back to the Future” anyone?). It’s set to release October 9. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think.

  1. How did I not know about this?! I live in Springfield and my husband works in Decatur lol. The movie has some of my favorite actors and looks quite funny! Thanks for posting about this!

    • It was pretty crazy when I heard about the filming. I grew up about 45 minutes from Springfield and still only live an hour away. I actually went to Springfield to see them shooting one day, but when I got there, they had finished wrapping up in Springfield and had moved onto St. Louis. Just my luck. haha.

  2. LOL that’s the way it works :) The movie looks hilarious!
